- Description: Apple has sent the invites and a touchscreen MacBook Pro looks like the headline act. If a Mac is on your list, don't pull the trigger yet.

The Apple Pro and tell event planned for the 28th Oct 26 has everyone talking about one thing: a touchscreen MacBook Pro. Apple keeps its agenda under wraps, as it always does, but calling the event "Pro and tell" was a pretty loud wink.

If you have been circling a new Mac and your thumb keeps hovering over the buy button, this is a good moment to take a breath. The launch is close, and what turns up could change which laptop you actually want.

## What Apple has actually confirmed

The event is called Pro and tell, it starts at 10am Pacific time on 28th Oct 26, and it is a hands-on experience in Los Angeles. For us in Australia that works out to 4am AEDT on 29th Oct 26, so most of us will wake up to the news rather than watch it live. Apple's marketing chief teased it on social media with a line about being unable to wait to pro and tell. Subtle it was not.

## What is expected

Apple has not said what it will show, but based on the rumor mill we have a pretty good idea what might feature.

The star is a redesigned MacBook Pro, and it would be the first Mac laptop you can poke with a finger. Reports describe a sharper OLED screen, a lighter body and a small cut-out at the top of the display, in 14 and 16-inch sizes, with the faster M5 Pro and M5 Max chips inside. It is also reported to cost more than today's models. Macs have held out against touchscreens for years, so this would be a proper plot twist.

Alongside it, the reports point to a cheaper 14-inch MacBook Pro that keeps today's look but gets Apple's newer M6 chip, plus an iMac with the same chip.

The [iPad mini](https://www.apple.com/au/ipad-mini/?ref=blankidentity.com.au) is also tipped for a refresh, with an OLED screen, a camera moved to the long edge so video calls feel natural when you hold it sideways, and better speakers.

## Wait or buy?

Here is the plain answer, depending on what you are eyeing.

**If you need a laptop now:** buy the one you want. The current [MacBook Pro](https://www.apple.com/au/macbook-pro/?ref=blankidentity.com.au) comes with M5, M5 Pro or M5 Max chips, and nothing announced on the 28th stops it being a very good machine. If the new design really does cost more, today's model may turn out to be the sensible pick anyway.

**If you are after a top-end MacBook Pro and can hold off:** wait. A new design with a touchscreen would be the biggest change to the line in years, and you would rather choose with the real thing in front of you than regret it a fortnight later.

**If you want the entry 14-inch model:** the M6 rumour is the one to watch. A short wait could get you a newer chip in the same body.

**If you are eyeing the MacBook Neo:** go ahead. The [MacBook Neo](https://www.apple.com/au/macbook-neo/?ref=blankidentity.com.au) is the light, colourful everyday laptop, and none of the reports are about it. It is a different job to a Pro, so there is nothing to wait for.

Prices and Australian release dates arrive with the announcement, so sleep on it, check the news when you wake up on 29th Oct 26, then decide.

**At a glance**

- Event: Pro and tell, 10am PT on 28th Oct 26 in Los Angeles (4am AEDT on 29th Oct 26)
- Confirmed: the date, the time and the city
- Reported: touchscreen OLED MacBook Pro, entry 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6, M6 iMac, OLED iPad mini
- Current MacBook Pro: 14 and 16-inch, M5, M5 Pro and M5 Max
- MacBook Neo: 13-inch display, four colours, up to 16 hours of battery

**Verdict:** Need a Mac now, buy it. Chasing a top-end MacBook Pro, wait for the 28th. Eyeing a MacBook Neo, the event changes nothing.
