# Apple's First Foldable, iPhone Duo, Lands in Australia From $3,499

After years of patents, leaks and supply chain whispers, Apple has finally joined the foldable party. The iPhone Duo, unveiled at the company's September event in Cupertino, is a book-style phone that opens into the biggest screen Apple has ever put in an iPhone. It arrives in Australia next month, with a price tag to match.

The Duo was also the headline act at John Ternus's first keynote as Apple CEO, after he took over from Tim Cook at the start of September.

## Two screens, one shape

Closed, the Duo is roughly the size of a passport, with a 5.4-inch outer display that Apple says gives you about 90 per cent of the screen area of an iPhone 18 Pro. Open it and you get a 7.6-inch inner panel, around half as large again as the iPhone 18 Pro Max. Both screens share the same aspect ratio, so apps simply scale up or down when you unfold the phone rather than reshuffling their layout.

The inner display has a matte nano-texture finish designed to cut glare and make the crease less obvious, and both screens support ProMotion, Always On and up to 3000 nits of brightness outdoors. Opened, it is the thinnest iPhone Apple has made. Apple Pencil support on either display is due later this year.

## Built to take a beating

The frame is grade 5 titanium with a mirror-polished finish. The hinge, made from more than 100 components, supports the centre of the display so it sits flat when open, and a built-in magnet array closes it with a satisfying snap. The Duo carries an IP68 rating, and Apple claims the Ceramic Shield 2 glass on the front is three times more scratch resistant than the previous generation. Unlocking is handled by Touch ID in the side button rather than Face ID.

## Pro power, two batteries

Inside is the same A20 Pro chip found in the iPhone 18 Pro, connected to a custom vapour chamber to keep performance up during long gaming or multitasking sessions. Apple has split the battery into two cells, one in each half, and quotes up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner screen or 44 hours on the outer. The Duo is eSIM only worldwide, which Telstra, Optus and Vodafone all support locally.

The rear camera pairs a 48MP Fusion Main camera, with an optical-quality 2x telephoto option, and a 48MP Ultra Wide. Up front there is a Centre Stage selfie camera, plus a separate FaceTime camera hidden beneath the inner display. The folding design unlocks a few clever tricks: you can shoot selfies on the higher-quality rear cameras while previewing yourself on the outer screen, and a Kid Cue mode plays Peanuts animations on the outer display to get children looking at the lens.

## Software that bends with it

iOS 27 has been reworked for the Duo, moving the Dock and app controls to the side of the screen and bringing Split View, with two apps side by side, to iPhone for the first time. Netflix, Zoom and Slack already have versions built for the larger display. StandBy mode also works on either screen when the phone is propped up, even when it is not charging.

At $3,499, the Duo sits at the very top of Apple's phone line-up. Samsung and others have had years to refine their foldables, so the real test will be whether Apple's hinge engineering and software polish justify the wait and the premium.
