Fujifilm's [Instax Pal 2](https://www.instax.com.au/cameras/pal-2/?ref=blankidentity.com.au), the redesigned follow-up to its palm-sized companion camera, is now open for pre-order in Australia at AU$249.00\. It hasn't fully landed on shelves yet, but the timing says a lot on its own: tiny, phone-adjacent cameras that do one thing (take a slightly imperfect, slightly charming photo) are having a real moment, and Fujifilm just gave its version of that idea a proper redesign.

The original Instax Pal, launched in 2023, was a curiosity more than a camera: a small, egg-shaped shooter with no viewfinder, meaning you pointed and hoped. The Pal 2 throws most of that out. It keeps the core idea (a companion camera that pairs with your phone and, eventually, an instax printer) but rebuilds the body, the optics and the feature set around it.

## What's actually new

The biggest change is the shape. Where the original Pal was rounded and egg-like, the Pal 2 has been redesigned into a long, rectangular body that borrows more from classic analog compact cameras than from a toy. That redesign makes room for a genuine optical viewfinder, something the first Pal skipped entirely, so you can now actually frame a shot instead of guessing.

Under the hood, the Pal 2 runs a 10.7-megapixel 1/3.06-inch CMOS sensor behind a 28mm-equivalent f/2.2 lens, with a minimum focus distance of 8cm for close-up shots. A 1.0-inch LCD sits on top of the body for quick preview, and there's a new instax Animation mode: flick the format lever toward the LCD and the camera captures 10 frames in sequence for a flipbook-style animation, rather than a single still.

There are also five filter themes with six effects each, 30 total looks, up from the original's more limited set, and an angle-adjustment accessory is included in the box, doubling as a hand strap and a small stand for hands-free or awkward-angle shots. Fujifilm is pitching it at users aged 13 and up, which tracks with who's actually buying these things.

## Still a companion, not a standalone camera

The Pal 2 doesn't print its own photos. It connects over Bluetooth 5.1 to the free instax Pal 2 smartphone app, which doubles as a remote shutter and photo manager, and photos can also be pulled off over USB-C at roughly 0.7 seconds per image. The camera itself holds up to 100 shots before you need to offload them.

To actually print, you'll need a separate instax Link-series printer, an instax Mini LiPlay, or an instax Mini Evo. A format lever lets you preview shots in instax mini, SQUARE, WIDE or frameless crops before deciding what to print. It's a deliberate limitation: the Pal 2 is built to sit alongside the rest of the instax ecosystem, not replace it. Weighing in at 41g and measuring 37.0mm by 42.0mm by 42.3mm, it's genuinely pocketable, and the built-in lithium-ion battery takes two to three hours to charge from flat.

## Why tiny companion cameras are having a moment

The Pal 2 doesn't exist in a vacuum. Instax as a whole has been one of Fujifilm's biggest growth stories for years, and it's been joined by a wider digicam revival that's largely been driven by Gen Z: secondhand early-2000s point-and-shoots trading for inflated prices on resale apps, TikTok accounts built entirely around "digicam aesthetic" photo dumps, and a general fatigue with the flatness of phone photography. A tiny, dedicated, slightly limited camera reads as more intentional than pulling out a phone, even if the phone takes a technically better photo.

Fujifilm isn't the only one chasing that mood. Novelty companion cameras like the Kodak Charmera have leaned into the same space, betting that people want something small, playful and a bit imperfect to hang off a bag or a keyring. The Pal 2's redesign, with its more grown-up analog-camera looks and an actual viewfinder, reads as Fujifilm's attempt to make the case that its version is the more serious, more usable option in that fight.

## Price and Australian availability

The Instax Pal 2 is confirmed for Australia at AU$249.00, currently listed as a pre-order with stock still to arrive through local retailers including DigiDirect. It comes in Black or White, matching the two colourways confirmed for its US and UK launches. Fujifilm hasn't locked in an exact on-sale date for Australian stock beyond the pre-order window, so early buyers are effectively banking on the international rollout timeline, which points to late September 2026 in other markets.

- Colours: Black, White
- Sensor: 10.7MP, 1/3.06-inch CMOS
- Lens: 28mm equivalent, f/2.2, 8cm minimum focus

**Verdict:** The Instax Pal 2 is a genuine step up from a camera that was more novelty than tool, adding the viewfinder, sensor and design maturity the original badly needed. At AU$249.00 it's not an impulse buy, and it still leans on separate instax printers to actually produce a physical photo, but as a small, deliberately limited companion camera riding the wider digicam and retro-photography wave, it's one of the more credible options in a crowded field of cute-but-shallow rivals. Worth watching once Australian stock actually starts shipping.
