- Description: Apple's first foldable has landed, and it isn't called iPhone Ultra. Here's what the iPhone Duo actually offers, from its crease-free hinge to Australian pricing.

For years the [iPhone Duo](https://www.apple.com/iphone-duo/?ref=blankidentity.com.au), Apple's long-rumoured foldable iPhone, was known by a different working title inside the rumour mill: iPhone Ultra. Apple settled on a different name entirely when it unveiled the device on 9 September 2026, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro lineup. What has not changed is the headline claim: a foldable phone with an inner display that, according to Apple, folds flat without leaving a visible crease.

That single detail has dominated coverage since the announcement. Every foldable on the market today, from Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold line to Google's Pixel Fold, shows some evidence of its hinge line under certain lighting. Apple's pitch with the iPhone Duo is that its engineering team spent years chasing a crease-free result, and reviewers who have handled early units say the difference is genuinely noticeable.

## A hinge built to hide the crease

Apple's crease-reduction approach combines a titanium frame with a hinge assembly built from a titanium and aluminium blend, paired with ultra-thin custom display glass and new adhesive layers underneath the panel. The result, per early hands-on reports, is a fold line with a shallower depth and angle than rival devices, to the point that it is very difficult to see or feel in normal use. It is not the first time a phone maker has claimed to have solved the crease problem, but it is the first time Apple has put its name behind the attempt.

The phone carries an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance, unusual for a folding design given the moving parts involved, and Apple has given it a nano-texture matte finish option to cut down on glare and fingerprints across that large inner panel.

## Two screens, one phone

Folded, the iPhone Duo behaves like a normal, if slightly thick, phone: a 5.4-inch Super Retina XDR outer display with a hole-punch front camera. Unfold it and the 7.6-inch inner Super Retina XDR panel takes over, running at up to 120Hz with ProMotion and up to 3,000 nits of peak brightness, plus an under-display camera so nothing interrupts the screen. Both panels support Apple Pencil input, and iOS has been updated with split-screen multitasking and iPad-style sidebars to make use of the extra inner real estate, though Apple has stopped short of running full iPadOS on the device.

Open, the phone measures a claimed 5.4mm thick, which Apple is calling the thinnest iPhone ever made. Closed, that roughly doubles to just over 11mm, and the whole thing weighs 254 grams, noticeably heavier than a standard iPhone but in line with rival foldables.

## Chip, cameras and battery

Power comes from Apple's new A20 Pro chip, built on a 2-nanometre process and paired with 12GB of RAM, the same silicon used in the iPhone 18 Pro models. The rear camera system is a dual 48-megapixel Fusion setup (Main and Ultra Wide), with a 12-megapixel Center Stage camera handling video calls. Notably absent from the spec sheet is Face ID; Apple has instead built Touch ID into the side power button, a trade-off driven by the phone's thin folded profile.

Battery life is rated at up to 31 hours of video playback when using the inner display and up to 44 hours when using the outer display only, backed by fast charging that Apple says can restore a meaningful amount of charge in around 20 minutes.

## Price and when you can buy it

The iPhone Duo starts at US$1,999 for the 256GB model, climbing to US$3,199 for the top 2TB configuration. In Australia, Apple has confirmed local pricing of AU$3,499 for the entry-level model, well above the AU$2,449 starting price of the iPhone 17 Pro Max. It launches in two finishes, Night Sky and Star White. Pre-orders open on 16 October 2026, with the phone reaching shops on 23 October 2026, and Apple has flagged that initial stock will be limited.

## Why it matters

Apple has watched Samsung, Google, Honor and others sell folding phones for the better part of seven years without ever entering the category itself, and its absence has fed a running argument that folding hardware still is not good enough to carry the Apple name. Early reactions to the iPhone Duo, including hands-on impressions from outlets who have had time with the device, have been more enthusiastic than the pricing alone would suggest, with several reviewers describing the crease-free hinge as the first folding display that genuinely disappears in normal use. Whether that is enough to pull a mainstream audience toward a phone priced well above the existing Pro Max lineup is the question that will define its first year on the market.

**At a glance:**

- Name: iPhone Duo (previously rumoured as iPhone Ultra)
- Price: from US$1,999 (256GB) / AU$3,499
- Displays: 5.4-inch outer, 7.6-inch inner, both Super Retina XDR
- Chip: A20 Pro, 12GB RAM
- Cameras: dual 48MP Fusion rear, 12MP Center Stage front
- Battery: up to 31 hours (inner display) / 44 hours (outer display)
- Biometrics: Touch ID only, no Face ID
- Colours: Night Sky, Star White
- Pre-order: 16 October 2026, in stores 23 October 2026

**Verdict:** The iPhone Duo is a genuinely ambitious first attempt, and the crease-free hinge looks like the real engineering story here rather than marketing spin. But at close to AU$3,500 to start, this is a phone for early adopters and Apple loyalists with money to spend, not a mainstream pitch. If the display holds up as well over eighteen months of daily folding as it does on day one, Apple will have solved the problem that has held every other foldable back. That is still an if.
