# Jim Henson Company exhibition opens at GOMA, exclusive to Brisbane

Brisbane's Gallery of Modern Art has opened the summer blockbuster that will pull families north for the next seven months. *Make, Believe, Magic: The Worlds of The Jim Henson Company* opened on 12 September 2026 and runs until 18 April 2027, and it is showing only in Brisbane. The Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) describes it as a world premiere celebrating 70 years of the company behind *Sesame Street*, *Fraggle Rock*, *The Dark Crystal* and *Labyrinth*.

## What is on show

The exhibition fills four spaces on GOMA's ground floor: galleries 1.1, 1.2 and 1.3, plus the Sue and Brian King River Room. QAGOMA says it brings together hundreds of objects, from practical puppets and animatronic creatures to sets, props, costumes, original drawings and moving image clips. The AU Review, which previewed the show before opening, counted more than 500 artefacts, sets and puppets.

The headline piece is the Great Hall set from the Emmy Award-winning *Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock*, installed at GOMA as a world first. The show traces the company's path from hand-operated puppetry through to animatronics and digital work, covering Jim Henson's Creature Shop projects for television, film and stage.

## The Australian connection

The Henson company has deep local roots, and the exhibition leans into them. Featured productions include the science fiction series *Farscape* (1999 to 2003), which was filmed in Sydney, the Academy Award-winning *Babe*, and *The Portable Door* (2023), which was shot in Brisbane. *The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance* also features.

## Free films at the Cinémathèque

Alongside the exhibition, GOMA's Australian Cinémathèque is running three free film programs with more than 90 titles across the season: *Screened to be Believed: The Jim Henson Company*, *Where the Wild Things Are Made: Jim Henson's Creature Shop* and *Beyond Henson: Puppetry and World Cinema*. Screenings run on select Wednesday and Friday nights and daily on Saturdays and Sundays.

- **Multi pass (five visits):** A$57 to A$120
- **Family bundles:** 10 per cent off combinations of at least four tickets (two adults with two or three children, or one adult with three or four children)

QAGOMA recommends booking ahead, particularly for school holiday periods.
