Nothing beats a linen shirt for Australian summer. It breathes when the humidity climbs, dries fast after a swim or a sudden downpour, and looks better the more relaxed you let it get. Here is how to buy one that lasts the season (and the next few).

## Fabric weight: the first thing to check

Linen is made from flax, and the fibres are naturally hollow and quick to move moisture away from skin. That is why it feels cooler than cotton on a 35 degree day. Weight matters, though. Most shirting linen sits somewhere between light and mid weight, and a lighter cloth drapes and cools better while a heavier one holds its shape and resists see-through patches in pale colours. If you plan to wear the shirt open over a tee at the beach, go light. If it needs to survive office air-conditioning and a commute, a slightly heavier hand is more forgiving.

Check the label for 100% linen if you want the full effect. Linen blends with cotton or viscose crease less and feel softer from day one, but they give up some of the coolness and the character that makes linen worth buying.

## Cut and fit

Linen does not stretch, so fit matters more than it does with cotton. A regular or relaxed cut is the safest choice: enough room through the chest and shoulders that the cloth can move and breathe, without tipping into tent territory. Look for a collar that sits flat without stiff interfacing, or recent trends with no collar, a curved hem that works both tucked and untucked, and sleeves long enough to roll to the elbow without riding up. Sizing down in linen is a common mistake, because the fabric needs air between it and you.

## How linen creases and softens

It will crease. That is part of the appeal, not a defect. Linen fibres are stiff and take a fold readily, so a shirt that looks crisp in the morning will be properly lived-in by lunch. The upside is that the same fibres relax with every wash, so a new shirt that feels a bit papery in the first week usually turns soft and supple with wear. Think of those creases as texture.

## Washing and care

- Wash cold on a gentle cycle, with the buttons done up, and go easy on detergent.
- Skip the tumble dryer where you can. Heat shrinks linen and speeds up wear at the seams.
- Shake the shirt out and hang it on a wide hanger while it is still damp, and the weight of the cloth will pull most of the wrinkles out.
- If you want a sharper look, iron it slightly damp on a high setting, or use a steamer for a softer finish.
- Always follow the care label on the shirt you buy, as finishes vary from brand to brand.

## From work to dinner

A linen shirt covers more ground than most people expect. For the office, wear it tucked into tailored chinos or lightweight trousers with leather shoes or clean white sneakers. For dinner, leave it untucked, roll the sleeves and leave the top button open over dark denim or shorts. In a colder, air-conditioned room, a navy knit or an unstructured blazer goes over it without any fuss. Stay with earthy and pale tones (white, sand, sky blue, navy, sage) and they all work together, which makes a small linen wardrobe easy to rotate.
