Street photographers who prefer a slightly tighter view have their answer. On 26 August 2026, Ricoh Imaging confirmed it is developing the **Ricoh GR IVx**, a version of its pocketable APS-C GR IV compact fitted with a newly developed 40mm-equivalent lens. The camera is planned for winter 2026 or later (northern hemisphere timing), and Ricoh has not yet announced pricing.

## Why 40mm matters

The standard GR IV uses a 28mm-equivalent wide-angle lens, the classic street photography focal length. The x models go longer. Ricoh says the GR IVx's field of view "differs from the 28mm-equivalent wide-angle lens of the RICOH GR IV" and "creates new possibilities for snapshot photography." In practice, 40mm is closer to how the eye sees a scene, which suits portraits, details and everyday documentary work where 28mm can feel too wide.

The GR IIIx established the formula with a 40mm-equivalent lens on the previous generation's sensor platform. Ricoh has also flagged that GR IIIx production is expected to end with October 2026 shipments in Japan, so the new model will be its direct successor.

## What we know about the specs

The new lens is 26.1mm (40mm equivalent) with an f/2.8 to f/16 aperture range, built from eight elements in six groups. DPReview reports that three of those elements are aspherical.

Behind it sits an APS-C (23.3mm x 15.5mm) CMOS sensor of around 25.74 megapixels, which DPReview says is the same 26MP backside-illuminated sensor used in the GR IV rather than the 24MP chip in the GR IIIx. The rest of the development specs include:

- Five-axis sensor-shift image stabilisation
- ISO 100 to 204,800
- Hybrid autofocus with face and eye detection
- A 3.0-inch touchscreen LCD
- 4K video recording
- USB-C with Power Delivery support
- An approximate weight of 265g with battery and card

DPReview also notes improved start-up times, the larger-capacity DB-120 battery and wi-fi 5.

## When it might arrive

Ricoh's official window is "winter 2026 or later". For context, DPReview points out that the GR IV went on sale about three months after its own development announcement, which would put the GR IVx around the end of the year if Ricoh follows the same pattern.

## Price and availability

- **Release:** planned for winter 2026 or later
- **Price:** not yet announced, in Australia or overseas
- **For reference:** the 28mm GR IV currently sells for A$2,199.95 at Australian retailer Ted's Cameras
