- Description: Galaxies, nebulae and the Moon are all within reach of your backyard, and this little white telescope does the hard part while you watch from your phone.

Somewhere above your backyard right now there is a galaxy, a glowing cloud of gas and a Moon covered in craters you have never really looked at. For most of history, photographing any of it meant a car boot full of gear, a laptop and a strong desire to 'nerd out'. Now there is a little white telescope that makes makes stargazing too easy.

It is the [Seestar S50 Pro](https://www.zwoastro.com/product/seestar-s50-pro/?ref=blankidentity.com.au) from ZWO, a company built on the idea that astrophotography should be easy and fun. Think of it as a telescope, a camera and a very patient assistant, all packed into one small unit that you control from your phone.

## Why it's the easy way in

Traditional astrophotography asks you to buy a telescope, a mount and a camera, then wire them together and learn what each bit does. The Seestar skips all that. Everything lives inside one compact body, so there is nothing to connect and nothing to balance. If you can open an app, you can use it.

Pick something in the sky and tap, and the Seestar points itself at it, then follows it as the Earth turns. It stacks the pictures as it goes, so the image gets cleaner and richer the longer you let it watch. You sit back and see a faint smudge slowly turn into something that looks like a space poster. That moment, when your own photo appears on your own screen, is honestly the best bit.

## What you can photograph

More than you could imagine really. The Moon is the crowd pleaser, with craters and mountain shadows that look unreal on a phone screen. Bright planets show up as tiny glowing discs. Then come the deep-sky targets: nebulae like the Orion Nebula, star clusters that sparkle like spilled glitter, and galaxies that need a bit more patience but reward you for it. The wide camera is handy for sweeping shots of the Milky Way, too.

The S50 Pro also has a mode for everyday viewing, so it is equally happy pointing at a distant hill or a flock of birds in daylight when the stars have not come out to play.

## Setting up is genuinely simple

A first night goes something like this. Pick a spot with a good view of the sky, away from bright streetlights. Set the Seestar on a small tripod or a steady table and switch it on. Connect your phone over Wi-Fi and open the app. Choose the Moon for your first go, since it is bright and forgiving, then watch the picture build up on your screen and save the ones you love. Once you are hooked, try a nebula on the next clear night.

That is the whole kit list: the Seestar, a phone or tablet, and a clear sky. A warm jacket and a thermos are optional but highly recommended.

## Who it suits

Strangely enough this if for everyone. It is for the curious person who has always wondered what is up there and never wanted to learn a pile of jargon first or over commit with a telescope that is too hard to use. It also suits families who want a project, people who love travelling and want something that packs into a bag, and keen photographers who fancy trying the night sky without starting a whole new hobby from scratch. And because its just as happy operating in daylight you can replace the binoculars on the balcony. If you later want to go deeper, you will already know what you enjoy.
