Sony's WF-1000X line has always been the earbuds serious audio people recommend over Apple's own, even to iPhone owners. The WF-1000XM6 makes that recommendation easier to justify.

## A Redesigned Shape

The most immediately obvious change is physical: a new shape that fits differently in the ear than previous generations, addressing one of the more common complaints about the outgoing model. It's a small change that makes a real difference across a full day of wear.

## Where It Actually Competes

Superb sound quality remains the WF-1000XM6's calling card, but this generation adds intriguing new features that close the gap with Apple's ecosystem advantages, without giving up the sound signature that's kept audiophiles loyal to the line. It's a genuinely close call against the AirPods Pro 3, which says more about how far Sony has pushed the format than it does about any weakness in Apple's buds.

**Spec callout:** Redesigned ear-tip shape, improved sound signature over WF-1000XM5.

## Pricing and Availability

Sony has set the WF-1000XM6's official Australian RRP at A$499.95, sitting above the A$429 Apple charges for the AirPods Pro 3\. That's a real premium for buyers who aren't already committed to Sony's sound signature, though the earbuds have already turned up discounted at some retailers within weeks of release. The WF-1000XM6 launched in Australia in February 2026, in Black and Platinum Silver.

## What's New Under the Hood

Sony says this generation delivers around 25 per cent more noise cancellation than the WF-1000XM5, most noticeably in the mid-to-high frequencies, driven by a new HD Noise Cancelling Processor QN3e working alongside an upgraded Integrated Processor V2, Multi Noise Sensor technology and an Adaptive NC Optimiser that continually adjusts to ear shape and environment. Audio processing has moved from 24-bit to 32-bit, and the earbuds carry an IPX4 water-resistance rating. Sony also says the new body is around 11 per cent smaller than the outgoing model, which lines up with the redesigned fit already mentioned above. Battery life is rated at up to 8 hours per charge and 24 hours total with the case, and call quality gets a boost from dual microphones paired with a bone-conduction sensor and AI beamforming.

By comparison, the AirPods Pro 3 rate up to 8 hours of ANC listening, or 10 hours in Transparency mode with the Hearing Aid feature enabled. Apple has added heart-rate sensing for workouts, Hearing Test and Hearing Aid capabilities, Live Translation support in ten languages, and an IP57 water and dust resistance rating well ahead of the Sony's IPX4.

## Verdict

For Android users, this is an easy recommendation. For iPhone owners weighing sound quality against ecosystem convenience, it's the first time in a while that decision has felt genuinely close.
