- Description: Seven long years, one email, and the Cybertruck is off the Australian menu. What reservation holders get now, and we have a quick look at some viable alternatives.

Tesla Cybertruck Australia cancelled is not a search phrase anyone with a deposit down wanted to type, but here we are. On 23rd Oct 26, Tesla emailed its Australian and New Zealand reservation holders to say the right-hand-drive Cybertruck is off the table, nearly seven years after the first deposits were taken.

If you were one of them, you are in good company. Plenty of people reserved a Cybertruck back when it still looked like a prop from a sci-fi film, cleared a space in the garage and spent years rehearsing how they would explain it to the neighbours. That conversation can now be retired, and it is fair to feel a bit flat about it.

## What happened

According to Tesla's email to reservation holders, "plans to produce Cybertruck for Australia and New Zealand have been discontinued". The email goes on to say the reservation is cancelled, so there is no quiet waiting list to hang around on and no "maybe next year" hiding in the fine print.

Tesla never put an Australian price on the Cybertruck, so there was never a sticker to compare against. What people were holding was a place in the queue rather than a confirmed order, which is part of why the news lands as more of a full stop than a surprise bill.

## What it means for reservation holders

The practical bit is kind. As reported, Tesla is returning deposits, with the money due back within 30 days, so nobody is left out of pocket for having believed in the pointy truck.

There is also a consolation prize. As reported, reservation holders who order a new Model 3 or Model Y will get 12 months of FSD (Supervised) free. That is Tesla's driver assistance package, where the car does plenty of the work but you stay in charge and keep your eyes on the road. It is not a Cybertruck and nobody is pretending it is, but it is a thoughtful gesture, a bit like being offered a very nice bicycle after the bus was cancelled.

## What you can still buy

If the appeal was Tesla itself, the good news is that the rest of the range is right there. The [Model 3](https://www.tesla.com/en%5Fau/model3?ref=blankidentity.com.au) is the sleek, sensible sedan and the most affordable way into a Tesla, which makes it the easy choice for anyone who mainly wanted the badge and the tech.

For a bit more space, the [Model Y](https://www.tesla.com/en%5Fau/modely?ref=blankidentity.com.au) is the family-friendly midsize SUV, with room for the kids, the dog and the weekend gear. It is the one most Cybertruck refugees will end up looking at, particularly with that free year of FSD (Supervised) on the table.

If it was the tray you were after, the tub and the towbar, there are other ways to scratch that itch. The [BYD Shark 6](https://bydautomotive.com.au/shark-6?ref=blankidentity.com.au) is a dual cab ute with a plug-in hybrid drivetrain, so it pairs a petrol engine with a battery you can charge at home. It is not a full EV, but it does give you a modern, tech-heavy ute with serious towing credentials, and it is on sale here now.

## The long goodbye

It is easy to be wry about a truck that always looked like it had been folded from a single sheet of steel, but the Australian wait was real, and plenty of people held on to that reservation with genuine hope. The upside is that the money comes back, the Tesla showroom is still open to you, and the ute market has never had more interesting options. Sometimes the best thing a long wait can do is end.

**Verdict:** The Cybertruck was never going to be a sensible purchase, which was half its charm, so the loss is more emotional than practical. If you held a reservation, take the refund, consider the free year of FSD (Supervised) and have a proper look at the Model Y or a plug-in hybrid ute like the Shark 6 before you let the disappointment pick your next car.
