- Description: Patagonia's Houdini is the one jacket we'd pick for an Australian spring: it handles wind and light showers and packs into its own pocket.

Spring in Australia is a negotiation. A cold start, a warm afternoon, a southerly that turns up at 5pm and a shower nobody forecast. The jacket I'd pick for it is the [Patagonia Houdini](https://www.patagonia.com.au/products/mens-houdini-jacket-24142-bob?ref=blankidentity.com.au): a 105 gram hooded shell that folds into its own chest pocket, and for me, is a must have

## Why a shell and not a "proper" jacket

Most spring days need one thing from a jacket: to take the edge off wind, and to cope with a brief shower. Anything warmer is dead weight by lunchtime, and anything heavier ends up over your arm. A shell this light solves that by not being a decision. You wear it when it's needed and pack it away when it isn't.

## What you get

Patagonia lists the fabric as recycled nylon ripstop with a durable water repellent finish made without intentionally added PFAS, and the weight at 105 grams. Water repellent means it sheds light moisture. It does not mean waterproof, and Patagonia doesn't claim it is, so treat it as a shower jacket, not a storm jacket. The hood pulls tight in one motion without cutting into your side vision, and the cuffs are elasticated. The chest pocket zips and doubles as the stuff sack, with a carabiner loop.

## What I'd wear it with

Because the cut is slim and the fabric is plain, it works with the ordinary spring uniform: a white tee and chinos, a knit and jeans, or a hoodie underneath on a cold morning. It's a slim fit, so if you want a layer under it, make sure you check the size chart before you order. Black goes with everything. It also comes in other colours if you'd rather it stood out.

## Price and the catch

The Australian price on Patagonia's site is $169.95, with free shipping on orders over $150 and free returns and exchanges. That is not cheap for a jacket that weighs less than a phone. You are paying for the pack size and the build, and for the brand's lifetime repair offer. If you only need something for the odd shower, a cheaper windbreaker will do. If you want one jacket you'll actually carry everywhere, this is the argument for spending a little more.

## Who it suits

It suits anyone who wants a jacket that lives in a bag: commuters, weekend walkers, people who run or ride and want something for the cold first kilometre, and travellers who need a layer that takes almost no luggage space. It is less suited to anyone who wants real warmth, because a shell this thin adds very little on its own, and it is a poor match for sustained rain.

The jacket is also made in a Fair Trade Certified factory, and is make from recycled nylon ripstop so not only is it comfortable its relatively guilt free.
