Netflix's September slate is stacked with returning series, and Guy Ritchie's The Gentlemen is the headline act. The stylised crime drama, spun out of Ritchie's own film of the same name, is back for a second season this month.

## What's Returning

The Gentlemen's first season proved Ritchie's brand of dry, violent, aristocrat-adjacent crime comedy translates cleanly to a longer format. Season two picks the tone back up without missing a beat, and it arrives alongside a genuinely strong month of scripted television for Netflix.

All eight episodes of season two dropped on Netflix on 3 September. Theo James returns as Eddie Horniman, the reluctant aristocrat turned crime boss, alongside Kaya Scodelario as Susie Glass and Ray Winstone as her father Bobby Glass. Giancarlo Esposito, Hugh Bonneville and Vinnie Jones also return, joined by Daniel Ings, Joely Richardson and Benedetta Porcaroli. Set a year on from the first season, the new episodes follow Eddie as he partners fully with Susie and Bobby to scale their operation from a cannabis farm beneath the Halstead estate to lakeside villas in Italy, raising the question of whether his ambition, and the strain it puts on his alliance with Susie, has finally outgrown what the family business can hold.

## Behind the Camera

Guy Ritchie created and directs the series, with Matthew Read serving as lead writer and executive producer alongside writers Danielle Ward, John Jackson and Iain Weatherby. Netflix has already renewed the show for a third season, with Ritchie noting that "the world has expanded, and the consequences carry weight", suggesting the stakes will keep climbing rather than reset.

## A Franchise Ritchie Keeps Returning To

The Gentlemen began life as Ritchie's 2019 feature film starring Matthew McConaughey and Hugh Grant, before he reworked the concept into this Netflix series with an almost entirely new cast and story. It's part of a run of crime capers, from Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels through Snatch to RocknRolla, that Ritchie has built his directing career on, and the Netflix version gives him room to stretch the same tone across a full season rather than a two-hour runtime.

## The Rest of the Slate

Ryan Murphy's true-crime anthology continues with Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story, a reboot of the sitcom A Different World premieres, and a Call My Agent! continuation film reunites the ASK agency team five years after the original series finale. It's the kind of month that rewards checking in on more than one returning favourite.

**Details:** All eight episodes streaming now on Netflix, part of the Standard with Ads plan from $9.99 a month in Australia through to Premium at $28.99.

## Verdict

For a series that could easily have coasted on its film's reputation, The Gentlemen has built its own identity across two seasons now. Worth a rewatch of season one before diving back in.
