If your feed looks anything like ours, it is wall to wall with sunglasses that promise a "celebrity look" for next to nothing. Some are lovely and some fall apart by Boxing Day. This summer sunglasses guide is about telling the difference: what were seeing on the runways right now as part of SS27, which shapes suit which faces, what lens colour does to the way you see, and eleven pairs I'm loving right now. Don't worry boys, this is just part one, part two is the [men's guide](https://www.blankidentity.com.au/mens-summer-sunglasses-guide-2026/). If you only want a single pick, start with [our one-pair choice for an Australian summer](https://www.blankidentity.com.au/what-id-buy-one-pair-of-sunglasses-australian-summer/).

## What is actually in for summer

SS27 accessories forecasts keep pointing at the same handful of shapes, and most of them are already on the shelves. Expect the soft cat-eye, a rounder and friendlier take on the sharp 1950s version. Ovals are back, from chunky and bold to small and neat. Aviators are showing up in warm, translucent colours, shields are going wide and futuristic, and thin metal rounds are turning up in gold and silver tones. Tortoiseshell and mixed metals, a tortoise frame with a gold arm for example, are the finishes to look for.

The nice thing about a trend list like this is that you do not have to follow all of it. Pick one shape, and let the rest go past.

## Choosing by face shape, without a rulebook

Forget the old charts. A better way to think about it is balance and contrast. A round face usually looks great in something with an angle, like a square or a sharp cat-eye. A strong, angular jaw is softened by curves, so ovals and rounds work. A narrower face can carry an oversized frame, while a wider face tends to like a frame that is not too wide. A heart-shaped face with a wider forehead often looks good in a bottom-heavy aviator or a soft butterfly.

That said, the best test is the mirror and your own taste. If you love how it looks, it is the right shape, and you will wear it more than the sunnies you bought because a chart told you to.

## Colour: frames, skin tone and lenses

For frames, think of colour as a flattering light. Warm skin tends to glow next to tortoiseshell, caramel, gold and olive. Cool skin often suits black, silver, clear and softer pinks and blues. Darker hair can handle a heavier frame, and fair or blonde hair usually looks better in something lighter, like a honey tortoise or a milky tone. Then look at your wardrobe. A neutral frame goes with everything, while a bright one is a statement and should be bought on purpose.

Lens colour is more than looks, because it changes what you see. Grey lenses darken without shifting colours, so they are the most true-to-life. Brown and amber lenses warm things up and add contrast, which is nice in bright, flat light. Green sits somewhere between the two. Pale, fashion-y tints can look lovely but let more light through, so check the category (more on that below).

## The light science, kept short

Here is the short version. Australian sunglasses are sold under the standard AS/NZS 1067.1:2016, and ARPANSA tests sunglasses against it. The standard sorts lenses into categories from 0 to 4\. Categories 0 and 1 are really fashion lenses with little tint. Categories 2 to 4 are properly tinted, with category 2 for general use, category 3 for bright conditions, and category 4 very dark and not meant for driving. Look for the category on the swing tag.

Size matters for the same reason. A larger lens, or a frame that sits close to the face, lets less light sneak in around the edges, and that is a good excuse for the oversized trend. Polarised lenses are a separate feature: they cut the glare that bounces off water, roads and car bonnets, but they do not change the UV rating. A tint does not equal UV protection either, so go by the label, not by how dark the lens looks.

## Eleven pairs worth a look

These run from under $40 to just over $7oo, and each one is inline with what the trends we are seeing for SS27\. Below is the list we are loving right now.

### [Le Specs Metamorphosis](https://www.justsunnies.com.au/products/le-specs-metamorphosis-2429745?ref=blankidentity.com.au)

![Slightly oversized square sunglasses with a thin gold metal frame and brown gradient lenses](https://storage.ghost.io/c/1e/c4/1ec40a4f-84a0-482b-aa02-e946534e85fe/content/images/2026/10/Le-Specs-Metamorphosis-Bright-Gold-Brown-Angle_Sunglasses__92422.1731385667.1280.1280.jpg)

Le Specs Metamorphosis. Image: Just Sunnies

A softly squared, slightly oversized gold frame with brown gradient lenses. It is the pair for anyone who wants the thin-metal look without the designer price tag, and the gold goes with almost everything in a summer wardrobe. It is listed at $76.50 (the recommended price is $90) and the lenses are Category 3, the darker end of everyday.

### [Le Specs Air Heart](https://au.lespecs.com/products/air-heart-mink-polarised?ref=blankidentity.com.au)

![Le Specs Air Heart sunglasses in a translucent tan frame with brown lenses](https://storage.ghost.io/c/1e/c4/1ec40a4f-84a0-482b-aa02-e946534e85fe/content/images/2026/10/0aa1aec5bad3f514680b9420200a1290_1600x.jpg)

The soft cat-eye, done in a milky mink tone with brown lenses and a slim metal bar across the top. It is oversized and a little dramatic, which is exactly why it works with a simple white shirt. Right now it is $39, down from $80, which makes it one of the easiest yeses in this guide.

### [Ray-Ban Aviator](https://www.brighteyes.com.au/ray-ban-aviator~292?ref=blankidentity.com.au)

![Ray-Ban Aviator sunglasses with a gold metal frame and light brown gradient lenses](https://www.brighteyes.com.au/assets/full/805289305033.jpg)

The aviator is the pair that never really leaves. This one has a gold frame and light brown gradient lenses, so it sits on the warm side of the trend without trying too hard. It is $219.18 and the lenses are Category 2, which suits most days. If you want a little more tint for the beach, look at the darker options in the range.

### [Ray-Ban Jackie Ohh](https://www.justsunnies.com.au/products/ray-ban-jackie-ohh-rb4101-4101710t558?ref=blankidentity.com.au)

Ray-Ban Jackie Ohh. Image: Just Sunnies

A butterfly shape with a retro, old-Hollywood air, in havana tortoiseshell with polarised brown gradient lenses. It is wide and generous, so it covers a lot of face, and the tortoiseshell flatters warm and cool skin alike. It is $275.40 (recommended price $306), with Category 3 lenses.

### [Oroton Avelina](https://www.brighteyes.com.au/oroton-avelina-ols2650844-biscuit-tortoise-brown-g?ref=blankidentity.com.au)

An Australian label with a knack for polished, grown-up accessories. The Avelina comes in biscuit tortoiseshell with brown gradient lenses and a small metal detail, a good example of the tortoiseshell-and-metal mix that keeps coming back. It is $211.28 and the lenses are Category 2, in a small fit, so it suits narrower faces.

### [Oroton Blaire II](https://www.brighteyes.com.au/oroton-blaire-ii-oro2556472-black-w-neue-tortoise?ref=blankidentity.com.au)

Black at the front, tortoiseshell down the arms, with smoke lenses that are polarised. The D-shaped frame is easy to wear and quietly smart. It is $228.25, with Category 3 lenses, which makes it a sensible choice for glare on the water or a long drive.

### [Prada PR14WSF](https://www.brighteyes.com.au/prada-pr14wsf-01r0a6-53-caramel-tortoise-powder-br?ref=blankidentity.com.au)

This is the cat-eye with some weight behind it: a rounded, sculpted acetate frame in caramel tortoiseshell with a pale powder-coloured temple and brown gradient lenses. It is $433.57 and the lenses are Category 2\. It is a big, confident shape, and the warm tones are kind to most skin.

### [Saint Laurent SL 276 Mica](https://www.brighteyes.com.au/saint-laurent-sl276mica-043-brown-grey-lenses?ref=blankidentity.com.au)

Saint Laurent SL 276 Mica. Image: Brighteyes

A sharp, angular acetate frame in a muted taupe, with grey lenses. The Mica is the pair for someone who prefers a clean line to a curve, and it will make a plain outfit look deliberate. It is $537.98 with Category 2 lenses.

### [Saint Laurent SL 457](https://www.brighteyes.com.au/saint-laurent-sl457-010-crystal-blue-lenses?ref=blankidentity.com.au)

Saint Laurent SL 457\. Image: Brighteyes

A clear crystal frame with blue lenses, made from recycled acetate. It is light on the face, a little unexpected, and it is the one here that makes the blue trend easy. It is $408 with Category 3 lenses.

### [Miu Miu MU A50S](https://www.brighteyes.com.au/miu-miu-mua50s-zvn30c-68-pale-gold-blue-gradient-s?ref=blankidentity.com.au)

Miu Miu MU A50S. Image: Brighteyes

Slim, curved and a bit sporty, in pale gold metal with gradient mirror lenses. It is the thin-metal idea pushed forward into something that looks like it belongs in a music video. It is $616.08 with Category 2 lenses.

### [Saint Laurent SL 364 Mask](https://www.brighteyes.com.au/saint-laurent-sl364mask-002-black-black-lenses?ref=blankidentity.com.au)

Saint Laurent SL 364 Mask. Image: Brighteyes

The shield, in its most dramatic form: one wide lens over a thin metal frame. It covers a big area, which is good news for a harsh Australian afternoon, and it needs very little else to make an outfit. It is $730.81, with Category 3 lenses, and it is the splurge on this list.

## Which one is yours?

If you like the soft cat-eye, start with the Air Heart, then step up to the Prada. If you want the aviator or thin metal look, the Ray-Ban and the Le Specs Metamorphosis keep it simple, and the Miu Miu takes it further. For tortoiseshell, the Oroton pair and the Jackie Ohh are the warmest picks. For something bolder, the clear Saint Laurent and the shield make a statement. In every case, check the lens category on the tag before you pay.
