The Woolworths Bachelor's Handbag is real. From 14th October the supermarket is selling a reusable, insulated bag styled like its hot roast chicken packaging, for $10, and Australia's most honest accessory nickname has finally been made literal. This is a light look at the bag and at what to wear with it to make this fashion must have really POP!

What the bag is

According to Woolworths' announcement, the bag is shaped and printed to look like the hot roast chicken packaging, with a sturdy handle, a detachable adjustable strap and built-in thermal insulation. It is meant for carrying a hot chook home or keeping lunch cold. Woolworths says it sells 20 million hot roast chickens a year, and describes the bag as "the ultimate novelty accessory for super fans of the hot roast chook."

It goes on sale on 14th October for $10 at select Woolworths Supermarkets, Metro stores and online, while stocks last. Woolworths hasn't published the bag's dimensions or materials, so check the size and material out in store before you plan an outfit around it.

How to make it look deliberate

The trick with such a chic piece is to dress everything else down so the bag is the hero, not an accident. That means plain, good-quality basics in neutral colours. Here is a five-piece capsule, all from Australian retailers.

1. A white tee. The Oli Tee is $40, in 100% cotton with a boxy, slightly cropped fit. A clean white tee makes the bag the only loud thing in the outfit.

2. Linen shorts. The Finley Linen Short is $80, in 100% French linen with a drawcord waist and a mid-length cut. Warm weather, a bag shaped like lunch: it fits.

3. A plain cap. The unisex Everyday Cap is $40, a 100% cotton unstructured six-panel with an adjustable brass closure. It finishes a weekend look without trying.

4. Black sunglasses. The Driver Frame retails for $120, an acetate retro shape with mineral lenses, rated Category 3. This is the one splurge, and it is what makes the rest read as styled.

5. A classic watch. The Casio F-91W is $59.95, weighs 21 grams and has an alarm and a water resistant case. A supermarket-bag outfit deserves a watch that is equally unbothered.

Is it worth the hype?

As a bag, it is a $10 insulated carrier that also happens to be the funniest thing in the shop. The capsule above comes to $339.95, which is far more than the bag, so treat it as a guide to the look, not a shopping list. If you only want the bag, queue early: Woolworths says stocks are limited.
