Jaguar Type 01 Explained: The Electric Four-Door GT Jaguar Is Betting On

Jaguar's first electric GT has landed, with three motors, 757 kW and a fast-charging trick up its sleeve. Here is what the Type 01 means for the brand reset.

The Jaguar Type 01 is finally here. On 7th Oct 26, Jaguar fully revealed the production version of its electric four-door GT, the first car of a brand reset that has been teased for the better part of two years. It is big, fast and very different from anything Jaguar has sold before, and it has a lot riding on it.

What is the Jaguar Type 01?

The name is Jaguar's own shorthand: "Type" nods to the C-type, E-type and F-TYPE, the "0" stands for zero tailpipe emissions, and the "1" marks the first car of a new generation. In Jaguar's words, the zero signals a complete brand reset. The car is designed, developed and built in the UK, with production at Solihull.

It is a long, low four-door GT of just under 5.24 metres, with a 3.2 metre wheelbase and a claimed drag coefficient of 0.23. Instead of a rear window it uses a camera-based rear view display, and the cabin pairs a 24-inch OLED driver display with a vertical 7-inch touchscreen for controls.

Three motors, 757 kW

The Type 01 uses three electric motors: one 260 kW motor up front and two rear motors of up to 310 kW each. Combined, that is up to 757 kW and 1365 Nm, which makes it the most powerful road car Jaguar has built. The claimed 0 to 100 km/h time is 3.2 seconds. Drive is to all four wheels with a rear bias, and Jaguar says the rear motors can be switched off when you do not need the extra performance, which adds roughly 30 km of range.

Range and fast charging

The battery is 118 kWh, running on an 850 volt architecture rather than the 800 volts common in high-end EVs. Jaguar's US-style EPA claim is about 643 km. A figure of around 720 km on the WLTP cycle is also being reported, but it is not an official number yet, so treat it as an expectation and not a promise.

Peak DC charging is 350 kW, and Jaguar says that is enough to add about 321 km of range in 13 minutes, or take the battery from 10 to 80 per cent in about 22 minutes. Because of the 850 volt system, the car can also split its charging to reach up to 250 kW on the 400 volt chargers that are common here. AC charging tops out at 22 kW.

Price and timing

In the UK, the Type 01 is priced from £129,950, which is approx A$247,006. That is a conversion only, not an Australian price. UK sales are expected from Q1 2027, and European order books are reported to open in early 2027 with deliveries in the second half of the year.

For Australia, nothing is confirmed. Jaguar has promised a home charging solution for local owners with details to come, and Australian pricing, order dates and delivery timing are yet to be announced.

Why this car matters

The Type 01 is the first car on the new Jaguar Electric Architecture, the platform every future Jaguar is meant to use. Jaguar has said at least two more Type 01 versions are planned, and a more SUV-like sibling will follow once the first cars are on the road. In other words, this one car has to carry the whole story: a new look, a new price point and a new reason to walk into a Jaguar showroom.

That is a big ask. At this level it is up against cars like the Mercedes-Benz EQS and the electric Range Rover, and buyers will want to see how the Type 01 drives and how the scaled-down dealer network looks after them. Until it is on the road, the numbers are claims, but they are bold ones.

At a glance

  • Powertrain: three electric motors, up to 757 kW and 1365 Nm, rear-biased all-wheel drive
  • 0 to 100 km/h: 3.2 seconds (claimed)
  • Battery: 118 kWh, 850 volt architecture
  • Range: about 643 km (EPA claim); around 720 km WLTP reported, not official
  • Charging: up to 350 kW DC, 10 to 80 per cent in about 22 minutes
  • UK price: from £129,950 (approx. A$247,006, conversion only)
  • Australia: pricing, order dates and deliveries not yet confirmed

Verdict: The Type 01 is the clearest statement yet of what the new Jaguar wants to be: expensive, electric and unapologetically different. The spec sheet is strong, but Australian pricing and timing are the missing pieces.
