Garmin fenix 9 and fenix 9 Pro bring brighter screens, satellite messaging and a titanium case

Garmin has refreshed the watch that defines its outdoor range. Announced on 25 August 2026, the fenix 9 and fenix 9 Pro arrive in 43mm, 47mm and 51mm sizes, with brighter AMOLED screens, double the storage of the fenix 8 and, on the Pro, both inReach satellite and LTE connectivity across every size. For Australian hikers, trail runners and multisport athletes who spend time well beyond phone coverage, that last point is the headline.

fenix 9: brighter, faster, more storage

The standard fenix 9 gets an AMOLED display that Garmin says is twice as bright as its predecessor's, behind a scratch-resistant sapphire lens. Buttons are leakproof and the watch is dive-rated to 40 metres.

Mapping gets a meaningful lift. Garmin quotes 50 per cent more RAM than the fenix 8 for its routable built-in maps, map panning up to 30 per cent faster and a new perspective view that shows terrain in more detail. Storage doubles to 64GB, which means twice as many map downloads as the fenix 8 and room for 7,000 songs.

Battery life on the largest 51mm model is rated at up to 29 days in smartwatch mode.

New training tools

On the software side, the fenix 9 adds stamina zones and a stamina curve to help athletes understand how their energy holds up over long efforts. Indoor rowing metrics are expanded to include VO2 Max and a power curve, and rucking features now support variable pack weights up to 100kg, with compatibility for GORUCK workouts. A new feature called Garmin Epic groups multiple activities into a shareable story, useful for multi-day hikes or a race weekend.

fenix 9 Pro: satellite, LTE and a torch

The Pro is the model for serious backcountry use. It uses a titanium case and AMOLED displays rated up to 3,000 nits, and the 51mm version has a 1.5-inch screen that Garmin says is 15 per cent larger than the equivalent fenix 8. Every size includes inReach satellite and LTE connectivity, and an integrated LED flashlight with a green light mode is built in.

Battery life is quoted at up to 31 days in smartwatch mode for the largest size, and an optional solar charging version stretches that to up to 57 days.

Garmin's vice president of consumer sales and marketing, Susan Lyman, said: "fēnix 9 and fēnix 9 Pro are purpose-built for those who want to perform better and venture farther."
