Leica SL3-P: 8K Video and 44MP Stills in Leica's Most Advanced Camera Yet
Leica's flagship full-frame mirrorless camera adds 8.1K open gate video, 40fps bursts and a new hybrid autofocus system. It costs $10,500 in Australia.
Leica is best known for rangefinders and red dots, but its SL line is where the German company chases professional performance. The new SL3-P is, in Leica's words, its most advanced full-frame camera to date, and it arrives with two new lenses.
The specs
- 44MP backside-illuminated full-frame sensor and Maestro processor
- hybrid autofocus combining phase detection, depth mapping and contrast detection across 819 points
- up to 40fps continuous shooting and ISO 50 to 200,000
- up to 14 stops of dynamic range and a 176MP Multishot mode
- 8.1K open gate video at 24p, 8K at 30p, 5.9K at 60p and 4K slow motion at 120p, with ProRes support
The body keeps Leica's pared-back aesthetic, with fewer logos for photographers who would rather not advertise what they are carrying. Early reviews praise the design and image quality, with the caveat that you need to really want a Leica at this price.
Two new lenses
The Summilux-SL 50mm f/1.4 ASPH. is designed for travel and reportage, with 11 aperture blades and IP54 weatherproofing. The APO-Macro-Elmarit-SL 100mm f/2.8 updates a 1987 classic, offering true 1:1 macro plus a flattering portrait focal length, and costs $4,400 RRP.
