Samsung's Galaxy Watch Ultra2 Is the First Android Watch With a Built-In Dive Computer

Samsung's rugged Ultra2 gets a 5,000-nit screen, a bigger battery and Mares dive tracking, while the lighter Galaxy Watch9 starts at $649.

Samsung's foldables took the spotlight at Galaxy Unpacked in July, but the company also refreshed its smartwatch range with two models aimed at very different people: the rugged Galaxy Watch Ultra2 and the lighter, everyday Galaxy Watch9.

Galaxy Watch Ultra2: built for the water

The headline feature is diving. Developed with Italian dive equipment brand Mares, the Ultra2 is the first Android smartwatch with a built-in dive computer, showing real-time ascent and descent rates and safety decompression times. For Australians who spend their weekends on the reef or at the local dive site, that is a genuinely useful addition.

a 1.52-inch display that reaches 5,000 nits, which Samsung says is the brightest of any smartwatch
an 800mAh battery with 35 per cent more capacity than before
a design that is 12 per cent thinner despite the bigger battery
pro-level sport tracking, including trail running

Galaxy Watch9: lighter every day

The Galaxy Watch9 is 25 per cent lighter thanks to a new aluminium case, with a 3,000-nit display and a battery 20 per cent larger than its predecessor. Both watches run Qualcomm's new Snapdragon Wear Elite chip and an updated Samsung Health platform built around five pillars: activity, mindfulness, nutrition, sleep and vitals, including a heart health score and daily cardio load.
