Insta360 X6 goes 8K with bigger sensors and AI editing

Insta360 has updated its flagship 360-degree camera, and the headline numbers are big ones. The Insta360 X6, launched on 12 August 2026, records native 8K 360 video at up to 50 frames per second using two Sony 1/1.1-inch square sensors, and adds an AI editing engine designed to hand you a finished clip before you have even opened your phone. It is available now in Australia from A$1,049.99.

Bigger sensors for low light

Insta360 says the X6 has 33 per cent more sensor area than the X5, and it pairs that with a new low-light mode. Two ambient light sensors help reduce flicker under artificial lighting, and the company's denoising is tuned to hold detail in dark scenes. For anyone filming night rides, city walks after dark or dawn surf sessions, that is where 360 cameras have traditionally struggled most.

Video is captured in 10-bit colour, with native Dolby Vision support. Processing comes from what Insta360 calls a triple AI chip set-up: an 8-core 3.3GHz 4nm processor backed by two dedicated imaging chips.

AI that does the editing

The software story is as important as the hardware. InstaFrame 2.0 handles subject tracking, while a new AI auto-editing engine called PanoMind is designed to find the best moments in your 360 footage and cut them into a shareable edit. Reframing hours of 360 footage has always been the chore that puts people off these cameras, so this is a sensible place to invest.

Built for the outdoors

The X6 is waterproof to 20 metres without a housing (rated IP68), and to 60 metres with the Dive Case Pro. A 2,600mAh battery is rated for 140 minutes of recording at 8K30, and the camera has 64GB of built-in storage (47GB usable). There is a 2.32-inch OLED screen with 1,200 nits of peak brightness, plus wi-fi 6, USB 3.0 and Bluetooth 5.0. Insta360 pitches it as a three-in-one device that can work as a 360 camera, a gimbal replacement or a conventional action camera, and it is compatible with more than 100 accessories.
