iPhone 18 Pro Arrives With a Variable Aperture Camera and a $2,099 Price Tag
Apple's new Pro iPhones bring a mechanical variable aperture, the A20 Pro chip and the biggest battery gain yet on a Pro Max. Here's what Australians need to know.
The foldable iPhone Duo stole the headlines at Apple's September event, but for most buyers the phones that matter this year are the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. They are already in stores, and they bring the most significant camera change Apple has made to its Pro line in years.
Notably, there is no standard iPhone 18 this year. Apple has held the regular model over until 2027, so the Pro pair sits alongside the Duo as the new phones of 2026.
A camera with a real aperture
The headline upgrade is a new 48MP Fusion Main camera with a mechanical variable aperture. Instead of relying purely on software to fake background blur, the lens can physically open and close, and it adjusts automatically for depth of field and lighting. For anyone who has wished their phone could shoot a group portrait with everyone sharp, or a close-up with genuine background softness, this is a meaningful shift.
Photographic Styles gain new texture and grain controls, a set of Pro controls lets you customise which settings sit closest to hand in the Camera app, and Cinematic effects can now be applied after capture to video shot at up to 60 frames per second.
More power, longer battery
Both phones run the new A20 Pro chip, built on a 2-nanometre process and paired with a next-generation vapour chamber to keep performance up during gaming and AI tasks. Apple says updated battery designs deliver big gains in endurance, with the Pro Max getting the largest battery life increase Apple has ever given a Pro model.
Siri, rebuilt
The iPhone 18 Pro line ships with iOS 27 and Siri AI, Apple's completely rebuilt assistant. It can draw on personal context from your messages, emails and photos, understand what is on screen, and answer questions using broad world knowledge. It is rolling out in beta and in English first.
Finishes and accessories
Both models come in black, silver, glacier and a new burgundy, which Apple is clearly positioning as this year's hero colour. The accessory range has been refreshed too, with new Silicone and TechWoven cases, FineWoven wallets, a Crossbody Strap and a new magnetic Wrist Strap that attaches to the updated Clear Case.

The base Pro is A$100 more than last year's equivalent, but it now starts at 256GB. Apple Trade In offers between A$235 and A$1,595 in credit for an iPhone 13 or later, which will take some of the sting out for upgraders.
