Panasonic's 142g Lumix S 20mm F2.5 Is a Tiny Wide-Angle for Travel and Vlogging

Panasonic's new compact L-mount prime pairs neatly with the Lumix S9 for landscapes, street and self-filming. It lands in October for $849.

Panasonic has been building a small family of compact primes for its full-frame L-mount cameras, and the latest is a wide one. The Lumix S 20mm F2.5 follows the 40mm F2 released earlier this year and shares its thinking: small, light and affordable enough to leave on the camera.

Not quite a pancake

At 142g it is a genuinely light lens, but it is a little deeper than a true pancake. Panasonic has previously described this style as a "muffin", though reviewers have suggested "cupcake" might be a better fit. Either way, it balances nicely on small bodies such as the Lumix S9, which it seems designed to partner.

Who it suits

A 20mm lens is wide enough for sweeping landscapes, architecture and tight interiors, and it is a natural choice for vloggers filming at arm's length. At this size and weight it is also an easy travel lens.
